Fellow-Fashionista Erlina attended a 3 hour LOREAL keratinology seminar and shares with us some helpful information and tips on taking care of coloured hair...

Hair has 3 anatomy parts:-

• the surface is called the Cuticle and when zoomed in, the healthy one looks like a shiny armour with overlapped cells. This layer is where the glorious shine happens :) (or when damaged, it will lose the shine)
• the first inner part is called the Cortex. This is the most important part and where our melanin is. and for most Asians, the colour will be black. When we use hair coloring, they use a certain chemical to remove the melanin, and replace it with whatever colour we want. (when damaged, we will see split ends happens)
• the most inner part is called the Medula and it's the most gentle part. It also consists of more Melanin and when you dye too much, it will lose its black melanin and cause it to be greyish.. (worse than losing shine.. it will take a while to recover)

To treat coloured hair:-

• get a shampoo and conditioner specially for coloured hair. Because hair coloring products are normally Alkaline (INSTEAD OF ACIDIC), you need to get an Acidic shampoo + conditioner to balance the ph of your hair. The Alkaline works to open the Cortex area so the colorant can penetrate and change the melanine.
• Shampoo and conditioner will be sufficient for daily use to neutralise the Acid and close the shiny armour, which in turn makes hair shiny. And once every 1-2 weeks, we must do hair treatments too (those in bottles) And... the way to do it is not to apply to the root, but perhaps only 2/3 from the bottom. If we apply too much, our hair becomes oily and heavy. :)
